What Does A Postpartum Lactation Consultation Look Like?
For your convenience, we will come to your home.
First we will determine how well your baby is able to breastfeed. We will do this by weighing your baby before and after feeding. During feeding, we will also help you with latching and positioning your newborn while assessing your breasts and nipples.
Next, we will have you pump until your breasts are empty. We do this to determine milk supply, and make sure you know how to use your breast pump and it fits properly. Determining your milk supply allows us to calculate the amount of milk you make per day and compare that to what your baby needs each day to grow.
Finally, we will examine your baby’s muscle tone, range of motion, and mouth to see if there are any issues that may cause breastfeeding difficulties. This assessment is based in cutting-edge evidence-based practices, as recommended by the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).
By the time we eave your home, you will have a written plan to follow, emailed informational references, and a clear understanding of what follow up will look like in the next few days. Our home-visiting model keeps your baby safe, and helps to increase your confidence through postpartum education. MCC keeps the cost low for follow-up consultations so we can remain on your team as you continue on your breastfeeding journey. We will by by your side for the duration of your breastfeeding experience.
