Why Choose Maternal Child Connections?

Are you going to be a new parent, and worried you won’t know how to take care of your baby? Let Maternal Child Connections assist you as they assisted Jamie in Ravenswood: “I hired Lisa to be my postpartum doula and it was the BEST decision I have ever made. Lisa is a real life Mary Poppins and made the transition to Motherhood an amazing experience. My husband and I would have no idea what we were doing and now feel confident that we can take care of our little one successfully.”

The History of Maternal Child Connections

Lisa has worked as a hospital nurse in pediatric units, postpartum units, and Special Care Nurseries. Lisa also held the title of Pediatric Nurse at Haymarket Center, where she helped women addicted to heroin, now on Methadone maintenance, become mothers during their pregnancy and after the delivery of their baby. It was this experience that molds the values of MCC, as Lisa enjoys helping all parents learn how to feel comfortable in their new role.

Created in 2015, MCC offers lactation consultations, education, postpartum doula, and placenta encapsulation services. Lisa holds expertise in infant growth and development, attachment, and newborn care. Possessing a Bachelor's Degree In Anthropology (with a minor in Race Relations), Lisa proudly serves and learns from all Chicago families!

MCC strives to remain focused on the bond between mom and baby, mom’s mental health, and supporting partners as active participants in their baby’s life. MCC offers trauma informed care for families that have experienced infertility, miscarriage, medically complicated pregnancies, postpartum depression, and newborns residing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Meet Lisa Zimmermann RN, CPN, IBCLC

After an eventful pregnancy and traumatic delivery, I needed support in the first few months of my son’s life. I was expecting to return to work and pump, and could not find the community I needed to help me with this transition. With time, I was able to return to the things I loved, but I knew my postpartum time should have been easier and more enjoyable. I created MCC to see parents through these first few months with support, just as my husband and I needed. My lactation consultations do not end when I leave your home, and follow up is offered at a reasonable hourly fee so that I can help you as issues arise. I created an education session for pumping that is specific to your work environment, so when you return to work you have a plan and ongoing support.

I also offer postpartum doula services, which can help with your transition to parenthood while combining lactation expertise, infant care, and household management. I offer a new moms group to help women find new friends and increase their confidence in their new role as a mother. And finally, I have created MCC Mama Chat, a Facebook group designed to let moms ask questions, get advice, or just vent if they need to. I want you to feel successful as a parent, and realize that we are not meant to forge this new identity alone.

Lisa is the mother of a silly kindergartener and married to the king of bad jokes. She enjoys biking, reading, spending time with friends and family, and learning more about herself, her community, and humanity.

Meet Elizabeth Roberson RN-MNN, BSN, IBCLC

Liz is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 2015 and Registered Nurse since 2001.  Liz has been helping mothers and babies breastfeed since 2001, as she also works on a postpartum unit in a hospital setting in the south suburbs.  She obtained her Certified Lactation Counselor certification in 2011.  Then to further her own knowledge and fulfill her passion for helping mother’s breastfeed went on to obtain her IBCLC in 2015.  Liz has been working on a postpartum unit for the last 16 years and during that time has acquired her Maternal Newborn Nursery certification.  She was recognized by the March of Dimes in 2014 and received the Perinatal Nurse Excellence Award.  Liz’s love of teaching and wanting to see mother’s succeed in breastfeeding pushed her to start a lecture once a month so that resident doctors were more educated in caring for breastfeeding mothers. This allowed for more consistent information between lactation and doctors at the bedside.  She also helped to further educate fellow nursing staff by bringing a program to the hospital called Bridges To Breastfeeding to help nurses better understand how to help mothers succeed in breastfeeding not only in the hospital but in the community as well.

As a new mom back in 2006 still pretty fresh out of nursing school with limited knowledge of breastfeeding, Liz found herself in tears struggling to keep her breastfeeding career going.  She was very determined that she was going to make breastfeeding work and toughed it out through the pain.  So her goal every day is to make sure to the best of her ability that another mom does not have to go through what she did and has a hopefully pain free beautiful breastfeeding experience.  Happy to say her and her son (because it is definitely a joint effort) made it to a year which was mommy’s goal!

Liz enjoys spending her time with her 11 year old son doing all kinds of local activities.  Whether it is going on vacation, going for a hike, going to the movies, volunteering, or going to outside summer fests they are always on the go together.  Their most favorite holidays are Halloween and Christmas, they decorate to the extreme!
